Master Gardener Class of 2016

We now have 16 new and ready to go Master Gardeners from the 2016 class. I want to thank all the current Master Gardeners who helped with the class and/or taught different sections of the programs. Special Thanks to Linda Halsey who helped to coordinate volunteers and provide the cake for our exam night celebration. Thanks to Mike Brown and all the volunteers who helped to grade papers, set up breaks and clean up after each class. It made for a very smoothly run program again in 2016.

Also, thanks to Vince Plotczyk, Donna Boozer and Paula Lemond who provided their expertise in specific classes and different exercises during the class. Also, I want to thank the Master Gardener Association for the continued scholarship support they provided that gave extra opportunities to more students. Each new class helps us to continue to have a strong Master Gardener program and Association in Greenwood and the Lakelands area.

ENJOYABLE 2016 ANNUAL LMG PICNIC

The Annual Spring picnic was held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Connie Maxwell picnic shelter. There was great fun, delicious food and beautiful weather. There was even a Bring-One Share-One Plant table, with a diverse group of plants ready for new homes. The Social Committee outdid themselves as usual, with Ella Wham and Melody McInville knowing surely knowing how to do it right. And of course, Wally Sears is a true master of the grill. Thanks to all who helped and all who attended. The suggestion has been made to consider moving the picnic back to Thursday evening next year. Let's keep that in mind.

2016 ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

The 2016 Annual Awards Banquet was held February 11th at the Greenwood Metropolitan District Meeting Room. Members elected new officers/directors, heard a recap of the year's activities, celebrated the Master Gardener of the Year Award recipient, acknowledged newly certified Master Gardeners from the 2014 class and welcomed new interns from the November 2015 graduating class. Members having in excess of 100 volunteer hours during the past year were also recognized. Outgoing President Donna Feldmaier was acknowledged for her noteworthy service and presented with a card by Barbara Wells, our newly elected Incoming President. Melody McInville was elected to a second consecutive 2-year term as Treasurer and Donna Feldmaier to a one-year term as Past President. Chris Moon is also on the Board, with 1 year remaining on her term as Secretary. There was no candidate for the position of Vice President which remains vacant. As we always know, our members are as adept at concocting delectable entrees, appetizers, casseroles, salads and desserts as they are in designing and planting gardens. So there was no shortage of delicious food and wonderful conversation.

WONDERFUL 2015 SPRING PICNIC

The 2015 Annual Spring Picnic was held May 16th at Huckleberry Farms as over 25 members attended. Hosted by Susanne Blumer and her husband, it was a beautiful outdoor setting in the rolling hills near Hodges. Susannes hospitality was an inspiration to us all. Huckleberry Farms was complete with an airconditioned pavilion, chicken coops that mimicked the Charleston Battery, beautiful Silky poultry and fuzzy sheep, and a view that went for miles. The LMG provided hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks, with a wide variety of side dishes, appetizers, salads and desserts brought by members. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food, pleasant conversation great weather. Thanks so much to Suzanne and her gracious family.

There was a tremendous variety of interesting plants that encompassed all different types and cultivars. Special thanks to Sandy Orr who "unofficially" oversaw this event.
